Prohibited the production of baby bottle containing bisphenol A from June 1

January 29, 2022
In order to prevent food safety risks and protect the health of infants and young children, the Ministry of Health and other six departments recently issued an announcement stating that the use of bisphenol A for infant feeding bottles is prohibited.

The announcement pointed out that from June 1 onwards, the production of polycarbonate baby bottles and other baby bottle containing bisphenol A is prohibited. The time limit for import and sales bans is September 1.

Studies have shown that bisphenol A is an endocrine disruptor with estrogen-like activity that may induce precocious puberty or cancer in children. In view of the potential health hazards of bisphenol A, some countries have adopted strict management measures.

Since March 1, 2011, EU member states have banned the use of plastic containing bisphenol A to produce baby bottles, and ban the import of such plastic baby bottles from June 1.

Bisphenol A, also known as BPA, is a chemical substance that is widely used in the manufacture of plastics. It is mainly used for the production of various polymer materials such as polycarbonate (PC) and epoxy resins and is widely used in the production of chemical products and foods. Related products such as baby bottles, cutlery, microwave ovens, coating of food packaging containers, beverage bottles, and water supply pipes.

Bisphenol A can be migrated into foods through food packaging materials and containers. The national standards for food-related products stipulate their migration. Scientific research shows that bisphenol A migrating in food-related products is extremely small, and bisphenol A has not been found to have adverse effects on human health. Therefore, the father-in-law also stipulates that bisphenol A is allowed to be used for the production of food packaging materials, containers, and paints other than baby bottles, and the amount of migration should comply with the limits specified in the relevant national food safety standards.
